Buggy the Clown: From Roger's Underling to "Leader" of the Cross Guild

Buggy the Clown, one of the most unique and unexpectedly influential pirates in One Piece, is among the most memorable and recurring characters in Eiichiro Oda's work. Initially appearing as a comedic and seemingly insignificant pirate, Buggy has gained surprising influence throughout the story, becoming a legendary figure despite his poor combat skills. An ex-member of the Pirate King's crew, Buggy has gone through a long series of misadventures and strokes of luck that transformed him from a mere clown into one of the most powerful pirates in the world.

The Devil Fruit: Bara Bara no Mi

Buggy possesses the power of the Bara Bara no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to separate and control his body parts at will. This power makes him immune to slicing attacks, a particularly useful trait against swords and blades, but it is limited against direct or impact attacks. Once separated, Buggy's body parts can float freely in the air, and his limbs can attack independently of the rest of his body.

Despite the apparent simplicity of his power, Buggy uses the Bara Bara no Mi to perform tricks and schemes, building an image around himself as a more dangerous pirate than he actually is.

Buggy and Roger's Crew: The Clown's Past

Buggy is not just any pirate: his past has roots in myth. As a young man, Buggy was a member of the legendary crew of Gol D. Roger, the Pirate King. During his travels with Roger, Buggy developed a rivalry with Shanks, another young pirate in the same crew who would later become one of the Four Emperors. Buggy and Shanks were very close yet rivaled each other: while Shanks was kind, charismatic, and idealistic, Buggy was selfish, petty, and money-driven.

A crucial event in his story occurs when, during one of their expeditions, Buggy finds an ancient treasure map and a Devil Fruit, the Bara Bara no Mi. Determined to become rich and discover the treasure, Buggy tries to keep the fruit for himself, pretending he has already eaten it. However, Shanks unexpectedly surprises him during his attempt to hide it, and in the confusion, Buggy accidentally swallows the fruit. This incident creates a rift between the two, and Buggy vows never to forgive Shanks, whom he blames for the loss of his treasure.

After Roger's death and the subsequent dissolution of the crew, Buggy embarks on his path as a pirate captain, determined to gain wealth and glory for himself.

The Encounter with Luffy and the First Defeat

Throughout the story, Buggy encounters Monkey D. Luffy shortly after the young pirate's adventures begin. Luffy and his crew end up in territory controlled by Buggy, who immediately shows hostility, eager to take revenge on Roger's crew and assert his own fame. Buggy demonstrates the power of his Devil Fruit but is quickly defeated by Luffy and his friends, who destroy part of his crew and leave Buggy adrift.

Despite this defeat, Buggy survives, thanks to his ability to disassemble his body to avoid fatal blows. From that moment, a cycle of encounters and confrontations with Luffy begins, where Buggy shifts from adversary to unlikely ally.

The Great Escape from Impel Down

After their first meeting, Buggy goes through events that lead to his capture by the Marines and imprisonment in Impel Down, the world’s maximum-security prison in One Piece. At that time, Luffy also arrives in the prison to rescue his brother Ace. Here, Buggy teams up with Luffy in a convenient alliance to organize a mass escape.

During the breakout, Buggy manages to rally a number of prisoners who view him as a charismatic leader and a figure of great power, especially when they learn that he was once part of Roger's crew. Buggy exploits the situation to his advantage, pretending to be a great strategist and manipulating the prisoners' devotion. With the help of Luffy, Crocodile, and others, Buggy succeeds in escaping from Impel Down and gains a legion of followers who see him as a new leader.

The Marineford War and the Birth of Buggy's "Legend"

After the escape from Impel Down, Buggy becomes involved in the Marineford War, an event that will change the fate of the world. Despite being terrified and inadequate, Buggy still manages to make an impression, showcasing theatrical scenes and demonstrating an extraordinary luck that allows him to survive among the strongest pirates in the world.

Thanks to his past with Roger and his surprising (and accidental) resilience on the battlefield, Buggy gains immense popularity. After the war, he uses his newfound status to gather a formidable crew, and the World Government promotes him to a member of the Seven Warlords, mistakenly believing he poses a serious threat.

Buggy and the Mercenary Market: Buggy’s Delivery

Having become a member of the Seven Warlords, Buggy further expands his empire by founding a mercenary organization called Buggy’s Delivery. With his image as a great leader, Buggy attracts numerous pirates, hiring mercenaries for commissioned missions and becoming a significant figure in the Underworld. Although lacking in strength and skill, Buggy proves adept at taking advantage of every situation for his benefit.

However, despite his prestigious position, Buggy continues to harbor mixed feelings towards Shanks and remains overshadowed by more powerful pirates. Nonetheless, his status remains intact until the dissolution of the Seven Warlords system, at which point Buggy must rethink his ambitions.

The Cross Guild: "Alliance" with Crocodile and Mihawk

After the downfall of the Seven Warlords, Buggy manages to achieve one of his most incredible feats: becoming the leader of the Cross Guild, an organization formed alongside Dracule Mihawk and Sir Crocodile, two of the most feared and respected pirates in the world. Although Buggy is essentially a figurehead, the world sees him as the true head of the organization.

The Cross Guild introduces a destabilizing novelty in the world of One Piece: the organization places bounties on Marine members, a revolutionary move that upends the traditional power structure. Buggy, propelled by a series of events beyond his control, is viewed as a revolutionary hero. This position of command seems to have been facilitated by the cunning of Crocodile and Mihawk, who use Buggy as a "mask" to operate without attracting the full attention of the Marines.

Buggy's Character: Cowardice and Luck

Buggy is a character that embodies irony and paradox. Often cowardly and insecure, he somehow manages to survive in extreme situations thanks to luck and his ability to manipulate others' perceptions. Buggy also exemplifies how, in the world of One Piece, power is not always the only path to success. With cunning and fortune, Buggy has managed to build a name that surpasses his abilities.

His relationship with Shanks adds depth to the character: while Buggy is deeply jealous and resentful, Shanks treats him kindly and considers him a friend, highlighting the divergence between their ambitions and how they view the world.

Conclusion: Buggy's Future in One Piece

Buggy is a character who never fails to surprise. His journey in the world of One Piece demonstrates that even the most improbable characters can play a crucial role in the plot. Oda continues to play with fan expectations, transforming Buggy from clown to Emperor.

Buggy's future remains uncertain but promising, and it is not out of the question that Oda has reserved a decisive role for the most famous clown in One Piece in the final events.
